i went to london for thanksgiving. i know, it may sound a bit mad, but i couldn't pass up a week-long break, some frequent flier miles, and the chance to stay in cambridge with ingrid. it was a fabulous trip! simply wonderful.
i arrived on sunday night after flying through minneapolis, taking the tube into london, the train to cambridge, and walking to 73 maids' causeway. i arrived to a warm house, a comfortable air mattress (it was giant), and a homemade norwegian meal - sheep and cabbage, with potatoes and carrots. such a good welcoming. ingrid lives in a house of 17 people - several brits, 3 french boys, and a few others. they are all so interesting, friendly, and smart - i loved hearing their perspectives on everything.
on monday, i walked into cambridge to explore. i went to favorite shops, the market, and then met ingrid for hot chocolate and a walk to our old college, selwyn. i love that town. i also went to class with her - a seminar on turkey. ingrid loves pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, and so i had brought the ingredients with me. we made them for her housemates, and they were a huge success! pumpkin puree was a novel concept, but i think we convinced them of its validity and ingenuity.
tuesday was another cambridge day. i wandered in town in the morning, and then met ingrid after her class. we walked to grantchester, to the orchard tea house, our favorite place. there we channeled the spirits of virginia woolf and other famous britons as we took tea all afternoon. finally, we walked back through the meadows and went to the king's college choral service - i love those boys' choir boys!
