where your heart is, there will your treasure be also

Miquell, Hiwot, Ehete, me, Johana, Anuja

one of our professors used this as the heading for a lecture this week, and it turned out to be applicable in many ways. firstly, his lecture was on the development of the heart (we are studying developmental biology, or how the baby develops in utero). secondly, he mentioned that the phrase was especially applicable when used in the context of cardiologists or cardiothoracic surgeons. finally, this week was the med student dance.

our dance is an annual tradition, and is called "moonlighting." a cute attempt at cleverly referring to the practice of staying overnight when doing rotations as a medical student. mentioning a medical student formal dance to those unacquainted with the glories of stanford med always elicits an incredulous laugh. and usually a slightly confused (or bemused) comment: "really?" or "like a prom?" a resounding YES is the answer to those questions. last night i, along with approximately 200 other stanford medical students and about 100 guests, boarded a bus in palo alto. destination: treasure island.

yes, i'm serious. treasure island was built in 1936-1937, for the Golden Gate International Exposition. it is an artificial island in the bay, and is home to the treasure island music festival (and has permanent residents. weird). tori was lovely and accommodating and did my hair in a very elaborate curled knot. it was the impetus for many many compliments. so to summarize: what do you get with 200 med students, 3 open bars, and 2 dance floors? well, i won't attempt to answer that, but it was definitely a fun time.
